Pyro-Guard Earns Unique Design Listing for 2-hour FRTW Bearing Wall Assembly

Testing at UL has resulted in a unique listing for a 2-hour fire-resistance rated bearing wall assembly of Pyro-Guard® fire-retardant-treated lumber and Pyro-Guard® fire-retardant-treated plywood. This new listing, UL Design No. V314, covers most fire exposures providing an alternative to those designers wanting a UL Design number.

Hoover’s Pyro-Guard® fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) does not require water or electricity to protect the wood and therefore provides passive protection throughout the wood products. When properly installed according to code requirements, FRTW never needs additional inspection or service and is free of ongoing maintenance costs.

“Whereas traditional Type IIIA construction requires noncombustible materials in the exterior bearing walls,” said Manny Muniz, retired Fire and Building Official, “UL Design Number V314 provides a means for using FRTW, per the International Building Code, in a more cost-effective alternative without sacrificing performance or safety.”

Hoover’s Pyro-Guard® lumber and plywood are widely used for weather-protected applications in buildings of Type I, II, and III construction. As pressure-impregnated, FRTW products listed by UL, Pyro-Guard® lumber and plywood comply with all requirements in the model codes and standards, including but not limited to: IBC, IRC, and IWUIC, as well as NFPA 101, NFPA 703, and NFPA 5000.

The corresponding UL Evaluation Report (UL ER7002-01) contains more information about Pyro-Guard® FRTW lumber and plywood products. Hoover Treated Wood Products also publishes an FRTW Design and Construction Guide with more information about FRTW, including framing, other interior, and exterior applications. Taught by their ICC Preferred Education Providers, Hoover Treated Wood Products delivers complimentary AIA-approved (HSW credit) seminars on FRTW.
